A couple weeks ago, Steve was at his son's soccer game in Roanoke, Va. He just happened to notice a sign at the soccer field for Black Dog Salvage. After the game, he decided to check it out.
Everything about Black Dog Salvage resonated with Steve, since preserving history is his biggest passion. He was so excited, he felt that he just had to meet the owner of this amazing treasure trove. He was promptly introduced to Sally, a black Labrador Retriever! (Actually, the original "Black Dog" was Molly, who sadly passed away at the ripe old age of 13 1/2, but not before fully training her replacement.) Little did Steve know that the human owners of the business were none other than the "Salvage Dawgs" of DIY network's docudrama of the same name.
I decided to watch a couple episodes of Salvage Dawgs, and could tell right off the bat that Mike was an abstract thinker. He sees things, not as what they are, but as what they could be. This is evidenced by some of their custom designs, my favorite being the roll top desk atop an iron stand. My father always had a roll top desk, so over the years, I look for them at flea markets etc. The older ones are hard to come by, and usually broken. Looks like that didn't stop Mike from adding iron legs and a few extra drawers in the form of old library card files!
Luckily, Mike Whiteside happened to be there that day. He and Steve wound up chatting for quite some time. They shared stories, experiences, project ideas, and the possibility of collaborating on some things in the future.
Our main focus at Historic Flooring is rescuing wood, and although we do come across some awesome architectural components from time to time, it is nothing compared to what Mike and his crew have amassed over the years! I am certain something very special will happen when these two visionaries put their heads together!
